When Peter Gabriel left rock royalty Genesis in 1975 for personal reasons, his musical future was full of uncertainty. But within 18 months he returned in style with his debut solo album and a hit single 'Solsbury Hill'. It set him on a path that has allowed his talent to blossom through the decades. Never one to stand still, Gabriel has constantly reinvented himself, never afraid to experiment and explore new musical avenues. His willingness to collaborate with all manner of people has also resulted in film scores and joint projects with a diverse range of artists from Kate Bush to Martin Scorcese, as well as Sinead O'Connor, King Crimson's Robert Fripp and Coldplay's Chris Martin. His passion for World Music has seen his long-standing commitment to the WOMAD Festival and outside of music political activism and humanitarian issues have played a big part in his life. With Gabriel now in his seventh decade A Life In Vision is a chronological, visual biography of his extraordinary and colourful career. From the early days of Genesis through to the present day it is crammed full of glorious photography, much of which is previously unpublished, along with a timeline narrative by Genesis aficionado Alan Hewitt.

Draw in Order to See - A Cognitive History of Architectural Design (Paperback): Mark Alan Hewitt Draw in Order to See - A Cognitive History of Architectural Design (Paperback)

Draw In Order to See is the first book to survey the history of architectural design using the latest research in neuroscience and embodied cognition. At present, among the dozens of books on architectural drawing, design theory, methodologies, model making, CAAD, and planning, there is no book that specifically looks at the history of representation as a reflection of cognitive habits among individuals and groups of architects. As a historian and a practicing architect, Mark Hewitt has a unique point of view, that has enabled him to study the design practices of many architects during various eras, beginning in the Renaissance and stretching into the late 20th century. His earlier published books have touched on subjects related to design practice, as many have dealt with the lives of architects and designers. In addition, he has written dozens of biographies of architects, published essays on architectural representation, and wrote a master's thesis on visual perception and architecture. Hewitt has dedicated more than 30 years to writing about the process of conception (or visualisation) of buildings in the brain. Researchers on that subject now consistently cite one of his earliest studies on drawings and modes of conception. This book pursues that line of inquiry with the new discoveries about visual perception, cognition and embodiment that have revolutionised brain science. Hewitt believes that looking historically at how architects have designed, a brain-based practice developed during and after the Renaissance, once drawings became sophisticated enough to provide feedback for perception and memory in the cortex. His contention is that disegno, as invented in Italy during the time of Leonardo and Michelangelo, initiated that system, and that it was translated into a curriculum during the rise of Beaux Arts institutions prior to the 1920s, after which the Bauhaus system replaced it completely with what we have today.

Steve Hackett has been at the forefront of inventive music and original playing for almost four decades. After his origins and "apprenticeship" in 70's progressive rock group; Genesis, he moved on through the passing trends of time in a unique and solitary fashion. Since his highly successful debut album in 1975, his music as a solo artist has encompassed a vast array of differing styles. Both influential and inspiring to other guitarists, Hackett has honed his skills, from the exciting techniques he pioneered on the electric guitar, to playing nylon-strung guitar with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on some of his critically acclaimed, classical albums. In this, the first ever fully authorised biography, he reveals through many candid conversations with author and good friend; Alan Hewitt, the twists and turns that led to him being recognised as one of Britain's most revered and respected musicians; with contributions from family and friends, along with past and present collaborators. Following the 2009 hardback edition this 2012 paperback includes additional chapters and expanded appendices and takes us along the journey of his rich, diverse and exceptional musical career right up to the Beyond The Shrouded Horizon and Fire & Ice releases.

From exploring "How Do Houses Grow?" to "Getting the Details Right," it guides readers through typical projects and issues, such as finding more space within an existing footprint or blending in new windows or dormers without destroying historic character. The authors' expert perspective on dealing with historic buildings brings new ideas on design as well as problem-solving technologies, like compact water heaters. Also included is advice on meshing sustainable building practices, such as geothermal heating, with an already built house (the greenest house there is). Richly illustrated with color photos, plans, and drawings from nationally recognized architects, this book shares analysis and experience from two of the nation's most respected old-house professionals.
